He has beauty marks scattered across his face, though the most noteable one is the one on his lips and beneath his eye.

a personality blurb nilan can be best identified by his straightforward and assertive demeanor. often quiet, he gives the impression that he's no nonsense and taciturn ( which, is in part, true ). he is adventurous, whimsical, easygoing and freedom-loving. he's deeply passionate and stubborn about his beliefs which leads him to being deeply critical of others at times. he can also be flighty, quick-tempered, neurotic and noncommittal with a detached attitude that makes him difficult to befriend and understand at times.he has a love of learning, neverending curiosity for the world, and treats most people fairly with kindness. he goes out of his way to make people feel involved, and is usually one for witty remarks and mischief. he has a strong sense of justice, and even stronger beliefs that make him headstrong at times, but he usually means well in them.

Nilan is an only child born to two young Lao individuals in Atlanta, Georgia. His birth was a humbling, life-changing experience for them; his mother was a fresh high school graduate intent on becoming a nurse and his father was a petty criminal who decided on a career change the moment he was born. They were elated to have brought life into the world, as unexpected as it was, though they were sorely prepared for what his existence entailed.Shortly after his birth, his parents went to work to provide for him, as neither came from families with much money: they were Lao war refugees of the Vietnam War that lived on an ever growing poverty line. This remained the case through his parents’ tumultuous relationship that ended in a split when Nilan was four.Nilan’s grandmother held primary custody over him as his parents worked to provide for him. He rarely saw either except for his mother’s off days and visiting his father on the weekends. He was placed in gifted programs in grade 3, and remained in them until their dissolution when he reached grade 5. His parents felt comfortable leaving him alone for the most part, deeming him ‘a good, quiet child’, leaving his emotional needs unmet through much of grade school.

He had a difficult time in middle school. While it was easy to keep to himself and be standoffish from 6th to 7th grade, he transferred schools in 8th grade where he received relentless bullying. During this time, he developed his burning temper and poor emotional regulation and lashed out regularly at home. Between this, the growing changes in his body and psyche, and his parents’ inability to be there for him and their increasing, intense emotional abuse, he was mentally at his worst. Corporal punishment didn't work, and nobody was willing to talk to him in a way he needed, especially in therapy since it was a last ditch effort to control his behavior. He only attended for a few months before his mother pulled him from treatment.In high school, he moved in with his mother. While he still had a hard time relating to his peers, his communication towards them improved with his intentional masking, and he was able to maintain some friendships through it as he continued to navigate the hardships of teenagehood and what was happening at home. His grades improved thusly, but the gravity of his situation dawned upon him: he needed to get his family out of where they were in poverty, and he alone felt responsible doing that since he refused to join the military or police force as his older cousins before him seemed to do.Nilan was unable to apply anywhere far because of his financial situation. Thus, he enrolled in a nearby university as a psychology major. His relationship with his parents have since improved with his growing independence, but especially with his continued academic success. He graduated with Latin honors, and decided to return to school for his Masters: one part in fear of losing structure, and in another part to get a job in his field to get himself and his family out of poverty.
